Bringing the Khmers Rouges to justice! Trials in Cambodia, better late than never!
These people and many more had commited the worst crime to their own people, the Khmer Rouge trials had been delayed and denied. A UN-backed tribunal finally arrests the Khmers Rouges’ foreign minister. After years of frustrating delay, the first of Pol Pot’s henchmen is charged. Ung Choeun (“Ta Mok”), the last surviving leader of the Khmers Rouges, died on July 21st, probably aged 80.

Responsible for the Killing Fields and Year Zero Pol Pot waged a gruesome war on his own population.
As ruler of Cambodia Pol Pot was responsible for killing nearly 2 Million Cambodians (approximately one third of the population of the countries). During his time in power Pol Pot imposed an extreme version of agrarian communism where all city dwellers were relocated to the countryside to work in collective farms and forced labour projects. His regime achieved special notoriety for singling out all intellectuals, professionals, city residents, ethnic Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, civil servants and religious leaders, monks and other “bourgeois enemies” for murder. Men women children and babies were often brutally clubbed to death with hammers, axe handles, spades or sharpened bamboo sticks in order to save ammunition, and buried alive.
An invading Vietnamese army deposed the Khmer Rouge in 1979, and, despite years of guerilla warfare, they never took power again. Pol Pot died in 1998 without ever being brought to justice.
