Syria Assad Regime Genocides and Mass Atrocities

The Syrian crisis began in early 2011 when Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began a brutal crackdown on growing peaceful protests throughout the country. With the use of tanks, attack helicopters, and artillery against protesters and the torture and execution of children, protests spread and opposition groups took up arms. The attacks and counter-attacks escalated into a full-fledged civil war between the Assad regime with allied militias and an array of opposition groups. In less than four years, 250,000 people have died. Entire neighborhoods are gone. Half the population has been uprooted. 3 Million refugees fled into neighbouring countries. Syria is barely recognizable!!!

On Syrian state TV in late 2011, Bashar al-Assad’s brother Maher said that when their father Hafez first took power, the Syrian population was around 5 million, and that the regime would be willing to reduce it to that again to maintain power (i.e. to kill and to expel around 18 million people).

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jews. The world vowed, “Never again.” But today, genocides and mass atrocities continue in Syria, the World remain silence!

27-01-2015 was Holocaust Memorial Day, marking 70 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

This is a day on which the world leaders and media are queueing up to make pious speeches and write tearful editorials about their righteous horror at Hitler’s genocide.

While the same world leaders and media are tacitly and overtly supporting Assad, the blood-drenched dictator, ongoing genocide, their pious hypocritical speeches and their lies of ‘Never Again’ are simply offensive.

The “responsibility to protect”—known in international-relations circles as R2P—is a simple notion: Nations must protect their citizens from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, and must take action to help other nations whose governments can’t or won’t protect their peoples.

The Obama administration’s apparent distancing from R2P speaks to the tremendous challenge of mobilizing Americans—whether politicians or the public—to support action on humanitarian grounds. Saving lives is a hard sell these days.

Asked about the doctrine at her July confirmation hearing to be ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power said it is “less important, I think, than U.S. practice and U.S. policy, which is that when civilians are being murdered by their governments or by nonstate actors, it’s incumbent on us to look to see [what we] might do in order to ameliorate the situation.”

Use of Chemical Weapons in the Syrian Civil War

Use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Civil War has been confirmed by the United Nations. The deadliest attacks were the Ghouta attack in the suburbs of Damascus in August 2013 and the Khan al-Asal attack in the suburbs of Aleppo in March 2013. Several other attacks have been alleged, reported and investigated.

A U.N. fact-finding mission and a UNHRC Commission of Inquiry have simultaneously investigated the attacks. The U.N. mission found likely use of the nerve agent Sarin in the case of Khan Al-Asal (19 March 2013), Saraqib (29 April 2013), Ghouta (21 August 2013), Jobar (24 August 2013) and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya (25 August 2013). The UNHRC commission later confirmed the use of Sarin in the Khan al-Asal, Saraqib and Ghouta attacks, but did not mention the Jobar and the Ashrafiyat Sahnaya attacks.That Sarin was used in Khan al-Asal was also the conclusion of the Russian investigation of the attack.

The UNHRC commission also found that the Sarin used in the Khan al-Asal attack bore “the same unique hallmarks” as the Sarin used in the Ghouta attack and indicated that the perpetrators likely had access to chemicals from the Syrian Army’s stockpile.

The victims’ symptoms described by medics – were consistent with exposure to a nerve agent, including shortness of breath, disorientation, runny nose, eye irritation, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, general weakness, and eventual loss of consciousness.

Syrian War Takes Devastating Toll on Children

“Syria has gone now 40 years backwards from where it was”, the country is “one of the most dangerous places on Earth to be a child.”

The war violence has killed more than 20,000 children in Syria, who are often are not accidental victims of war, but rather deliberately targeted. Witnesses say children and infants have been killed by snipers, or become victims of summary executions or torture. Schools have been bombed.

A Syrian refugee child has been beaten by a restaurant manager in the Turkish city Istanbul for eating a customer’s leftovers, local media reported on Saturday.

A photo circulating on social media shows the 11-year-old boy sitting bloodied on stairs after having been beaten Wednesday by the manager of fast food chain Burger King’s outlet in the Sirinevler district.

The reason for the beating, accounts say, was the boy eating a customer’s leftover chips.

Halil, who fled to Turkey with his family from Aleppo, Syria two years ago said he wanted to grab leftovers because he was starving, but the manager punched him in the face and kicked his feet, the ‘Milliyet’ newspaper reported.

The boy said he was begging in the streets of Istanbul to earn a living.

Burger King said that the manager was fired after the attack.

“This incident is unacceptable,” it said.

Turkey is home to nearly two million Syrian refugees. Many reside in camps along the border, but others are scattered throughout the country, including big cities like Istanbul and Ankara

Syrian children were deliberately targeted by the Assad Regime

With hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced, the Syrian conflict is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today. The people of Syria are suffering unimaginable hardships. Children and babies are some of the worst hit victims of this crisis.

World Health Organization: “Ten Syrian children have tested positive for polio!” A disease once thought, at least in the civilized world, to be eliminated is back.

Former deputy national security adviser Elliott Abrams wrote: “So does “global citizenship” instead mean people-to-people assistance, avoiding politics and military action to aid the millions facing poverty and disease? Such an approach might well justify engagement with certain regimes we would otherwise seek to isolate, and in any event it would show deep solidarity with fellow human beings whatever their religion, nationality, or politics. But the Obama administration has shown no interest in such an approach.”

These children were gone too soon! Remember their innocent faces and their tragic death.
