Syria Detainees Endure Nightmare Underworld

Syrian Detainees: Torture is barbaric and systematic – The torture cells of Syria are places where “nobody hears your voice, nobody visits you”

“There are four security agencies in Syria, and each does all it can to prove it is more brutal than the other one.”

An interrogator at one of Damascus: “We torture people because we are sadists. We enjoy torturing people.”

Former detainee from a church-based human rights group say: “The 3 “rapist officers” they are like animals. I tried to protect myself but I’m just a short guy… when they were raping me, I start to say: ‘Please don’t do that, please don’t do that.'” As he was being raped, he says his attackers mocked him. “You want Assad to quit? This is for saying that you don’t like Bashar al-Assad.”

A teenage boy was brought into the cell. He, too, was raped. As the assault went on, the boy cried out for his mother.

A woman was arrested at a checkpoint in Homs late last year.

“He inserted a rat in her vagina. She was screaming. Afterwards we saw blood on the floor. He told her: ‘Is this good enough for you?’ They were mocking her. It was obvious she was in agony. We could see her. After that she no longer moved.”

Ground Zero Syria- Chapter 1

Ground Zero Syria: Chapter 1 (Parts 1-6)

Published on Sep 4, 2013

In 2012 VICE commissioned photographer and videographer Robert King to document the civil war that has been ravaging Syria for the past two years. Largely based on Aleppo, Robert’s footage of the violent conflict that continues to unfold in the region is perhaps one of the most thorough and brutally honest documents of a war that is increasingly destabilizing the Middle East as it spills over into neighboring Turkey and Lebanon. This full-length version of Ground Zero: Syria combines all six parts of our series to offer a startling glimpse into a chaotic war with no clear end in sight.

Ground Zero Syria is a series where we’ve compiled photojournalist and videographer Robert King’s footage into a series of raw, largely unedited vignettes that present a snapshot of the ancient city as it crumbles and burns while its citizens are killed indiscriminately.

Syrian Children: A Generation of Traumatized

“The world must act to save a generation of traumatized, isolated and suffering Syrian children from catastrophe.”

Save the Children released “A Devastating Toll: The impact of three years of war on Syria’s children” in March. It said at least 1.2 million children have fled to neighboring countries, 4.3 million children in Syria need humanitarian help, and that more than 10,000 children have died.

“What is most disturbing about the findings of this report is not only the sheer numbers of children killed in this conflict, but the way they are being killed.”

Some 71% of children were killed by explosives, while around 25% were killed by small arms fire. The report found that 764 children were executed, with 112 tortured, including some infants. Boys were killed twice as often as girls. Children in Daraa and Aleppo were among the worst-affected.
